The PEACE Afterschool Program began in the winter of 2010 with a small handful of young adults, headed by a guy named D’Markus, who wanted to express their faith and their love for their town by serving kids in the Devlin Place neighborhood, a low-income housing area in Kirksville, MO. The team began meeting in Devlin’s community room to help children with their homework and provide attention, a safe environment, and positive mentorship.
Those volunteers, and the many who have joined the team since then, could not have guessed how totally the kids at PEACE would steal their hearts. What started as some open hearts, willing hands, and donated snacks and supplies has grown to be a truly integral part of the Devlin community.
The PEACE Program has grown in many respects over the years. We are a bigger group of people, in a bigger building, serving more kids than ever, with more structure, skill, and vision than ever before. (For a more intimate look into that process, what we’re up to, and how we think, check out our blog, here.) We still have one simple passion. We love our kids.
In the last four years, we have been blessed to serve nearly 200 different kids in our city, and we look forward to touching many more little lives in the years to come!
What We Do
Located in Devlin #20, our afterschool program runs Monday-Thursday 3:30-5:30 during the school year. We offer homework assistance, reading intervention, healthy snacks, and engaging activities to children ages 4-14, at no cost to their families.
A typical day at PEACE consists of an hour of “homework time,” where all children are engaged in academic activity– whether homework from school, preschool-level crafts and letters and number practice, or the reading program in our library. Next, we share a nutritious snack. After snack, the kids participate in a variety of enriching activities, usually centered around real-world themes such as geography or health.
As a non-profit and volunteer-fueled organization, the PEACE Program is funded entirely by donations and grassroots fundraisers (selling homemade lemonade, that kind of thing).
Through the PEACE Program, we want to stimulate a love for learning and excellence in academics and life skills by providing Christian-based education assistance in a safe environment that promotes self-worth, respect, and responsibility. Our mission is to help young people foster bright dreams for their futures and to develop the skills necessary to become caring and respectful citizens able to better serve their community.
